The very first modification that was performed on the Roadster S was the installation of a BMW iPod interface. Back in 2004, BMW was the first car manufacturer to offer iPod integration. The functionality of BMW's first generation iPod interface was extremely limited, however, as it only supported playback of tracks in a maximum of six predefined playlists. The system is also unable to display artist, album and track names. Much better alternatives are currently available from third party manufacturers such as Intravee and Dension. At least the BMW interface is stable and reliable, something I cannot say about the Dension Icelink interface in my E39 Alpina B10 3.2.
My car was originally equipped with a 6-disc CD changer that became useless after installing the iPod kit, as it occupies the CD changer interface. During the rebuild of the car in 2008, the CD changer was removed to free up some storage space and to reduce weight with a massive 1.5kg .
