The E85 Z4 received a successful mid-life update at the end of 2005. At the same time, Alpina ceased production of the Roadster S after building 373 units. Changes for the facelifted Z4 included a revised rear bumper, updated LED rear lights, bi-xenon head lights and a new front bumper. The tail lights with the three horizontal LED stripes, reminiscent of BMWs at the time, did a particularly good job of refreshing the looks of the car.

Updating the rear lights to the facelift versions was no easy task as it required a new rear bumper and light control module, cutting of the bodywork, additional wiring and a software update. Because I had already damaged the rear bumper I could get the facelifted bumper at no extra cost. The facelift bumper was also a requirement for the aero kit carbon fibre diffuser that was high on my wishlist.

Peter Wolsink at Auto Totaal, the shop that did all the work on my car, took on the challenge of converting the lights to the facelift versions. With the help of a German dealer manual and instructions from the German Z4 forum zroadster.com, he eventually managed to get everything to work properly. The rear lights made a huge improvement to the looks of the car. I now probably have the world's only facelifted Alpina Roadster S.
